I discovered Zipzicles via the wonderful world of Facebook. The blogger mommy behind “100 days of real food” had posted on her page about Zipzicles and my interest was immediately peaked!
Zipzicles are a zip-top ice-pop bag (or freeze pop as I call them) by WizCo. You add your own ingredients so you are completely in control of what your kids are eating. They can be as pure and as wholesome as you’d like! You can even try sneaking in some veggies if you dare, or perhaps some dairy! Who knew a healthy freeze pop existed!? No High Fructose Corn Syrup, no artificial colors or flavors and no preservatives. Just what you put in! They can fit a variety of special diet needs such as gluten-free, nut contaminate-free, dairy-free, sugar-free, allergies, etc. The possibilities are truly endless! There’s even recipe ideas on their website! So easy!
On June 6th I turned my kitchen into a blog experiment. My test subjects: 10 ferocious toddlers and moms from my moms group. Here’s how it went down!
I decided to keep my recipe simple to appease to a variety of potentially picky subjects. I chose strawberry lemonade. (Tons more recipes can be found here or you can submit your own!) I followed the package directions, puréed the strawberries (the same way I used to make my daughter’s baby food) in a food processor and added a bit of lemonade. I filled each bag by the use of a turkey baster (you can also use a funnel), stood them up in a cup to keep the liquid uniform and froze overnight. It was easy peasy!
The next day we took to the playground for our play date and the ten tenacious tots. Despite some very cold hands, the Zipzicles were rated great! The kids loved them and a few even wanted more! Us moms were a bit surprised at how big the actual pops were (each bag holds 1/3 of a cup whereas more store-bought are about a quarter of a cup or less) and a few little ones were unable to finish their healthy snack. I was hoping that the bags would be a bit more reusable, but they are recyclable and BPA free. I still love that they are much healthier than store-bought freeze pops. I really like how portable they are too. Great to pack in a lunch box or cooler!
Overall, the moms said they can’t wait for this product to be available in stores to purchase! I’m sure most will enter the giveaway below! It would be great to be able to pick them up conveniently at the grocery store and the healthy ingredients to go in them all at the same time!
